Chemin de Fer Baccarat Explained: Rules, Strategy, and How to Win

Chemin de Fer Baccarat Explained: Rules, Strategy, and How to Win

James Bond, a famous cross-generational actor, has a favorite casino game he plays: baccarat, specifically the Chemin de Fer card game. This variant stands out for its subtle but significant gameplay twists.

Unlike traditional baccarat, Chemin de Fer is not solely chance-based. It also involves skills. That means strategic decisions can directly impact the game’s outcome.

Ready to master the beloved James Bond game? Today’s casino news provides a walkthrough of the rules, strategies, and how to win the Chemin de Fer card game.

Chemin de Fer Card Game: Rules, Strategy, and How To Win

Chemin de Fer’s meaning is not far-fetched. It is said to have earned its name based on the design of the Baccarat table’s grid, which resembles railway lines. Chemin de Fer means railway in French. The card shoe for the cards is the train.

Chemin de Fer Card Game Rules

Chemin de Fer baccarat is one of the top online casino card games. It has unique rules in gameplay, player roles, and betting mechanics. The objective is to beat the Banker by reaching a point value closer to 9 than the Banker’s. The goal is simple, but rules apply.

Below are the Chemin de Fer rules. For more on more, go visit our online casino guides section!

Player and Banker Rules

In other variants, players only bet against the house occupying the Banker role to reduce the house edge in baccarat. But the rules are different for the Chemin de Fer card game.

In this James Bond version of table games, 8–12 players take turns as the Banker and bet against one another.

The Banker faces off against one Player (the punter) at a time, while the other players bet against the Banker’s hand. To know more about the Player and Banker, check out our online baccarat guide for beginners.

Dealing Rules

Chemin de Fer rules require using six decks of the standard 52 cards. With these cards shuffled together, the Banker deals themself and the Player two cards each, face-down.

The sum of the two cards in each hand, with the result taken to modulo 10 (e.g., 6+8=14 to modulo 10 becomes 4), makes a hand value. Cards 2–9 are worth their numbers (2–9), 10s and face cards (king, queen & jack) are worth 0. And Aces are worth 1.

If the Banker loses, the shoe passes to the next Player, mimicking the “railway” motion, which makes the Chemin de Fer French interpretation even more meaningful. But if you are not intrigued by this, you can learn how to play EZ Baccarat, which is also fun.

The Third Card Rule

The player and banker can draw a third card to reach a hand total closest to 9. However, the rules apply to the Player whose hand totals 0–5. A banker with a hand total of 2 or less can do the same. You can learn how to play mini baccarat to understand how to draw a third card.

Betting Rule

Players can only bet on one of three outcomes: the Player’s hand, the Banker’s hand, or a tie.

Payouts and House Edge

The house edge in the Chemin de Fer card game is 1.06%, which remains unchanged even for a tie bet. The payout for winnings is 1:1. The Banker only has to pay a 5% commission on wins.

Chemin de Fer Card Game Winning Tips

Is baccarat luck or skill? It is luck, but the Chemin de Fer Card Game has both. The following winning tips apply to the variant:

As the Banker

Leverage your role’s slight statistical edge (1.06% house edge). Always chase a stronger hand by being aggressive with drawing decisions.

As the Player

Focus on betting against a Banker on a losing streak. If the Banker is on a winning streak, consider sticking with Banker bets until the tide turns. See our baccarat table guide for new players.

Bankroll Management

Have a bankroll for your game and set loss and winning limits to minimize the risk.
