Jennifer Shahade: Master of Checkmate and All-In Moves!
Jennifer Shahade was born into a gaming home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, on December 31st, 1980. Her father, Mike Shahade, is a FIDE Master in chess and a passionate player. Jennifer’s elder brother, Greg Shahade, is also an ardent chess player—an International Master—and a professional poker player. Her mother, Sally Solomon, is an academic Professor at Drexel University and a proficient card counter.
Jennifer’s pursuit of the same gaming career was not surprising. But the surprise lies in her achievements, which defy expectations. Following her family’s gaming tradition, she began playing chess at age 5 – her father was her teacher. She didn’t quite fancy chess at first, but the game finally found a place in her heart during high school when she started mastering the art of chess. She attended Julia Reynolds Masterman Public School.
Jennifer made her first mark in chess at 13 and became a national master before 16. Her course of study at the New York University (NYU) further strengthened her mental capacity for chess and gaming in general. She took classes in Philosophy, Literature, Art, and Journalism, which together have helped her greatly in her career, especially the aspect of art.
At age 18, Jennifer Shahade won the US Junior Opening in 1998, becoming the first female to win the competition. Moving on, she also won her first and second U.S. Women’s Chess Championship titles in 2002 and 2004, becoming an elite.
