How Does Poker Work?

The object of poker is to win a pot which is the sum of all the bets made by players participating in the hand. Everyone makes their bets on believing that they possess a good hand or hope to make a better hand. The winner will either have all the other players fold their hands or have the best hand of all players left standing at the end.

There are ten different possible winning hands in poker. Here’s how they rank from best to worst:

  • Royal Flush – 10 through Ace of the same suit
  • Straight Flush – Any five consecutive cards of the same suit
  • Four of a Kind – Four cards of the same rank
  • Full House – Three cards of the same rank plus two cards of another rank
  • Flush – Any five cards of the same suit
  • Straight – Any five consecutive cards of any suit
  • Three of a Kind – Three cards of the same rank
  • Two Pair – Two different sets of two cards of the same rank
  • Pair – Two cards of the same rank
  • High Card – The highest card in the player’s hand if no one has at least a pair

Types of Poker

Texas Holdem is undoubtedly the most popular poker game. Each player is dealt two hole cards, with five community cards in the middle of the table. Players must make the best five-card hand using their hole cards and the community cards.

The biggest difference between Texas Holdem and Omaha, another popular poker variation, is that players are dealt four hole cards instead of two. The game is played the same, except players must use two of their hole cards to complete their hands.

There are no community cards involved in draw poker, with all the action taking place before and after the draw. All players are dealt five hole cards and can replace any cards in their hands by drawing from the deck. Players then can call, fold, or raise, with the best hand or the last man standing winning the pot.

These are a few of the most popular poker variations.
