The Moral Compass of Gambling in a Modern World

History of Bunco Dice Game

The history of Bunco dates back to the late 1800s. People of all ages played it. Then, it had a close gameplay with an 18th-century English counterpart known as 8-Dice Cloth. In 1855, a gambler introduced it in San Francisco, United States. However, he revised the gambling game Banco in several ways.

Around the same time, the San Franciscans were exposed to the Mexican variant of the Spanish card game Banca, Monte. They were both played in establishments called Bunco parlors. The game was affected during the Civil War and thrived again after. Almost every major city in the nation had a Bunco-Banco game between 1870 and 1880.

Popularity In The United States

In the US, Bunco became popular in cities like Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and New York in the 1880s and 1890s. It became an ingrained family and parlor game that encouraged social contact. However, its progress was disrupted by the First and Second World Wars and Vietnam and Korea. But, in the early 1980s, Bunco gained popularity again due to numerous factors. These included a resurgence of interest in traditional family values, a stronger feeling of community and neighborhood, and the desire and need for more social interaction.

Some Bunco Game Rules

The standard setup for a game of Bunco is a group of twelve players split evenly among three teams of four. Each player is paired with another player on each of the tables. And each table has three dice on them. Players then take turns to roll the three dice to score points.

Each roll outcome has different points attached to it, which depend on what you roll and the round you’re on. To score a point, you must roll the same number as the round you’re in. However, if a player rolls all three dice with the same number but in a different round, it is worth 5 points.

Bunco World Championship

It was sponsored by Procter & Gamble’s (P&G) anti-heartburn medicine Prilosec OTC to benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Unfortunately, it lasted only two years and was discontinued in October 2008 because P&G’s association with the championship ended.
